Palais Lichtenau

Ein Haus des frühen Klassizismus aus der Zeit Friedrich Wilhelms II. An early Neoclassical house from the reign of Frederick William II

Erbaut Built 1796 – 1797

On the southern edge of the New Garden, a house was built in the final years of King Frederick William II’s reign. Its name recalls one of the best-known women at the Prussian court. Today its Ballroom is a venue for chamber music.

Baugeschichte Building history

In little more than a year, a house of unusual quality rose beside the New Garden – at the King’s expense.

Mai 1790May 1790

In May 1790, King Frederick William II acquired the plot at the southern end of the New Garden. He had been laying out the garden on the shore of the Heiliger See since 1787, and the Marble Palace was rising there as his summer residence.

1796 – 1797

Construction began in early summer 1796 and was paid for by the King. Michael Philipp Boumann directed the works. The roof structure was complete by September 1796, while the interiors took until the spring of 1797.

Who designed the house has never been finally settled. Both Boumann and Carl Gotthard Langhans, architect of the Brandenburg Gate, have been named; Langhans is credited above all with the interiors.

25. September 179725 September 1797

On 25 September 1797 the Palais was inaugurated with a celebration. At its centre was the actress Henriette Baranius, the future wife of the royal chamberlain Johann Friedrich Ritz.

For whom the house was intended cannot be said with complete certainty. Much suggests that it was built as a residence befitting Ritz’s rank. It takes its name from Wilhelmine von Lichtenau, to whom Ritz had been nominally married since 1782. She was in Italy when building began and spent the summer of 1797 in Bad Pyrmont; she probably never lived in the Palais.

16. November 179716 November 1797

Only weeks after the inauguration, Frederick William II died – and with him the era to which the Palais owes its existence.

Die Persönlichkeiten The people behind the house

Wilhelmine Enke, Gräfin von Lichtenau Wilhelmine Enke, Countess of Lichtenau

Dessau 1752 – Berlin 1820

Wilhelmine Enke was born in Dessau in December 1752, the daughter of a musician in the royal court orchestra. In the late 1760s she began a relationship with the heir to the Prussian throne, later King Frederick William II. He arranged for her education, and they had several children together. Even after the love affair had ended, she remained his closest confidante.

Wilhelmine advised the King on art and interiors, including the Marble Palace and the palace on Peacock Island. A long journey took her to Italy in 1795–96, and in 1796 the King made her Countess of Lichtenau.

After the King’s death, his successor Frederick William III had her arrested. The investigation found no punishable offence, yet her property was confiscated and she was held at Glogau Fortress until 1800. She was rehabilitated in 1811 and died in Berlin in 1820.

Architektur Architecture

Von der Straße in den Festsaal From the street to the Ballroom

The Palais Lichtenau is regarded as one of the finest examples of early Neoclassical architecture in Germany: clearly ordered, restrained in its ornament and remarkably refined within.

Die Fassade The façade

Above a high basement storey rises the principal floor, crowned by a substantial mansard roof. The windows are cut directly into the wall without surrounds; a continuous string course and the eaves cornice articulate the building. Towards the street, a central projection three bays wide steps forward beneath a triangular pediment.

On the garden side, a wall dormer and a double flight of steps open the house towards the garden.

The relief in the pediment was made to designs by Johann Gottfried Schadow and the Wohler brothers. At its centre stands Apollo, god of music and the arts – a motif that suits the house particularly well today.

Die Raumfolge The sequence of rooms

On the principal floor, the historic layout survives largely intact. Four rooms retain their historic decoration, and the doorways open up lines of sight that let them be experienced as one connected sequence.

Illusionistic painting opens up the room. In the arcades, the ceiling panels show a shell motif in delicate shades of grey and blue.

  • RosenholzzimmerRosewood Room

The wood panelling survives complete; the overdoors are by the sculptor Johann Christian Angermann. The room was restored in 1964 and 1970.

  • Ovales KabinettOval Cabinet

Four almost full-height round-arched niches, set on the diagonals, structure the oval room. The overdoors show sacrificial scenes in the manner of antique reliefs, beneath a coffered ceiling.

  • FestsaalBallroom

It occupies the full depth of the house. The painted decoration is by Bartolomeo Verona and Johann Carl Wilhelm Rosenberg; six horizontal oval medallions show buildings and landscapes of Peacock Island, and the figure scenes above the doors are probably after designs by Christian Bernhard Rode. During the 1973 restoration, one medallion was replaced by Dankwart Kühn’s depiction of the Gothic Library in the New Garden as a ruin.
